Purdue University

I stayed the weekend at Purdue and caught a football game. They Couged it, so I felt right at home.

Northern Illinois University

DeKalb, Illinois is a town I am still trying to figure out. After getting off the freeway, I drove for about 10 minutes through solid corn fields. The town itself seemed pretty small at first, but the longer I stayed, the larger the town grew.

Naked Juice was giving out samples on campus, and I decided to give them my thoughts.

University of Illinois

With 46 fraternities and 25 sororities, the University of Illinois is the largest Greek community in the nation. With nearly 6,000 students involved in a Greek organization, it was almost impossible to go anywhere without seeing letters of some sort.

Indiana State University

Terre Haute, Indiana has a strange history. Once a major train destination, this city has played many different roles. It was the 93rd largest city in the country in 1900 with 50,000 inhabitants. 110 years later, they still have 50,000 inhabitants. Brewery Row has a number of old brick buildings that used to serve as breweries, but have since turned into restaurants. When prohibition was enacted, Terre Haute didn't agree, and served as a major distributor for Chicago.

Now, the city revolves around the university.

Indiana University

Indiana University is home to the largest chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. At any given time, they have between 150 and 180 members, of which 90 live in the chapter house.

Since the house was full to capacity, the guys paid for a hotel room in the union building for me to call home during my visit. It was the fanciest hotel on a college campus that I had ever seen.

Iowa State University

Iowa State University was the first college in the state. The architecture is all stonework, and the campus feels like a park. It is fitting, considering O.C. Simonds, the landscape architect behind Central Park in New York City also designed the Iowa State campus landscape.

The chapter house fit in with the architecture of the area, even though it was built in 1988.

Morehead State University

Morehead State University has a long history. Previously a church-supported teacher-training school, it has grown to include a diverse set of degrees. It is one of only four universities in the country to offer a degree in space sciences.

The chapter didn't have a house, but I stayed with Glenn, the vice president, who added his own letters to his apartment.

Middle Tennessee State University

My visit to Middle Tennessee State was a change in my mode of transportation, as I had to fly there to make it on time. Who knew propellor planes still existed?

The campus was very modern, and I'm told it is the largest university in the state of Tennessee. This was the first visit to a large campus, and it was easy to get lost.

The house was going through some difficulties, with a frustrating landlord and city ordinances that wouldn't let them put letters on the house. Instead, they put all their efforts on the inside, and the whole time I was visiting people were painting, fixing, and cleaning the house.
